G8 leaders urge continued support for polio efforts

Polio was among the issues discussed at the recently concluded G8
summit, the meeting of the Group of Eight representatives from the
world's major industrialized countries and the European Union.

As part of their focus on global health concerns, heads of state
from the G8 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain,
Italy, Japan, the United States, and Russia) and the European Union
issued a joint statement on 16 July calling on international donors -
most of them governments - to increase financial contributions to
finish the job of ridding the world of the polio scourge.

"We urgently call for mobilization of financial support and will
continue to work collectively and with bilateral and multilateral
donors to close the funding gap for 2007-2008, and we will continue
to work with others toward securing the resources necessary to
finish the program and declare our planet polio free in the near
future," the statement said. Russia, as host of the summit, added to
the US$8 million it has already contributed to the initiative by
announcing a new contribution of $10 million.

A group of international health agencies, led by the World Health
Organization, welcomed the G8's attention to health issues.

"Through its focus on global health at this year's summit in St.
Petersburg, Russia, the Group of Eight is helping to ensure that
existing and emerging disease threats are tackled at the very
highest level," noted a joint statement from the WHO-led health
  group.
