Rotarians reach out to assist after earthquake

Dear Rotarians :

We are deeply saddened to learn of the recent earthquake in
Indonesia. We are touched by the commitment of Rotarians to assist
the communities affected by this disaster, which has taken the lives
of more than 5,000 people and left thousands homeless.

RI's International Service Programs section is continuing to provide
information regarding club and district relief efforts on the RI Web
site (www.rotary.org/programs/wcs/disaster/reliefefforts.html).
Additional club and district relief efforts will be posted on the Web
site as they are reported to RI. Please continue to check the Web
site regularly regarding opportunities to assist those affected by
the disaster. Rotarians wishing to contribute funds, donated goods,
or both, directly to club and district relief projects may visit the
Web site for opportunities to work with Rotarians in the affected
areas.

As always, we encourage you to work with organizations such as UNICEF
and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent
Societies, Doctors Without Borders and grassroots Rotary projects,
ShelterBox and Aquabox, to meet the immediate needs of victims
affected by the disaster.

Thank you for your continued commitment to helping those in need and
in demonstrating Service Above Self.

Sincerely,

Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar

Thinking, talent, time, treasure

Dear Amigos,

Before the 2005-06 Rotary year ends, we have an excellent chance to
secure a significant milestone for The Rotary Foundation: the
celebration of our one millionth Paul Harris Fellow. An achievement
of this magnitude is possible only because Rotarians like you give of
what many call the four Ts — your thinking, talent, time, and
treasure.

Thinking
Hope for the less fortunate begins when we start thinking about the
positive changes we can make in others' lives. In essence, we Create
Awareness and Take Action to address needs worldwide.

Talent
When Rotarians give of their talent and expertise to develop projects
that build stronger communities, we transform the lives of millions
of people, both locally and internationally. We are called to Service
Above Self.

Time
When Rotarians devote their time to volunteer in the spirit of
reaching out to others who need our help, we simply make the world a
better place. We encompass the Object of Rotary.

Treasure
When Rotarians generously give of their treasure to support programs
that educate, comfort, feed, heal, relieve thirst, shelter, and
advance world understanding and peace, we find meaningful and lasting
solutions to global problems. We are The Rotary Foundation.

When you take the four Ts to heart and contribute to our Foundation,
you make a life-changing difference for many others. You also inspire
your fellow Rotarians to follow your example.

In just a few short weeks, the 2005-06 Rotary year will end and
Rotary's first year into its second century of service will be
history. We have a unique opportunity to leave an indelible mark on
Rotary's history, if we can achieve the one millionth Paul Harris
Fellow by 30 June. Your help is needed to accomplish this goal and to
reach our annual giving goal of US$105 million.

For your contributions and your Paul Harris Fellow to count in this
Rotary year, please note the following deadlines:

Contributions sent by mail must be postmarked by 30 June and received
at The Rotary Foundation by 7 July.

Online contributions must be completed by midnight Central Time on 30
June.
Contributions sent by wire must be completed by midnight Central Time
on 30 June and received at The Rotary Foundation by 7 July.
Any contributions given after 30 June or received after 7 July will
automatically be counted in the 2006-07 Rotary year. Club presidents,
secretaries, treasurers, and Foundation chairs should be aware of
these year-end giving guidelines and send in contributions early.

Let's work to make 2005-06 a year to remember for The Rotary
Foundation. Thank you for lending us your thinking, talent, time, and
treasure! Together, we can — and will — make a positive difference in
the world.

Your friend and amigo in Mexico City,

Frank J. Devlyn

President's Message

June 2006
The Rotarian

Dear fellow Rotarians,

At the International Assembly in San Diego in February, Past RI
President and Rotary Foundation Trustee Bhichai Rattakul gave an
excellent speech on leadership and motivation, highlighting courage
and daring.

This year, the RI Board of Directors has shown great courage and
daring. In spite of possible legislation in Russia that would make it
difficult for Rotary clubs to organize, the Board decided to form the
first Rotary district in that country. The opening of China for
extension and the chartering of the two provisional clubs in Beijing
and Shanghai are further examples of courage and daring, as are the
decisions to go back to Cuba and to open Kosovo and Vietnam to Rotary
clubs.

However, leadership is much more than courage and daring. It is the
ability to think outside the box. For example, club presidents
sometimes have to accept majority decisions that may not be personal
favorites. District governors sometimes need to accept decisions that
are not popular in their own clubs because they are in the best
interest of the district. The Board has a particularly heavy burden:
Even though each director is elected from two zones, it is vital that
the director looks for what is best for Rotary International, not
just the two zones. A director has the right to speak for two zones
in the boardroom, but when it comes to decisions, the organization's
interests must be considered. As president, I too have had to accept
many decisions that might not have been my cup of tea. That has been
vital for the growth of our organization.

There are many schools of leadership in the world today. One approach
I favor is leadership by objectives. Together with a group of
managers, the leader decides on objectives; then, individually, each
member works toward the mutually agreed objectives. Another
leadership technique I favor is delegation. Delegation of
responsibilities shows confidence in one's
colleagues. After delegation, managers can follow up on work as it
proceeds.

A good leader must look beyond personal interest or aversion. One
must separate the business side of one's life from the personal side
in order to achieve good results in both areas.

Leadership and motivation are extremely important in Rotary. Success
is often based on courage and daring. Thanks for those words, Past
President Bhichai!
