British, Irish Rotarians increase reach through joint initiatives
By Vukoni Lupa-Lasaga
Rotary International News
This year, Rotary clubs and districts in Ireland and the United
Kingdom are participating in several cooperative initiatives to
increase the impact of their local and international service
projects.
They include joint efforts with the following organizations:
Pendragon, a car dealership, and the Jaguar Enthusiasts' Club, an
auto association, to raise funds for The Rotary Foundation
Barnardo's, a nonprofit, to help at-risk children and families
The Institute of Cancer Research, to raise awareness about early
screening and treatment for cancer
Impact Foundation, to help carry out education and health projects
in Africa and South Asia
Wheelchair Foundation, to provide mobility for people with
disabilities
"We have not set any fundraising targets this year," says Peter L.
Offer, president of Rotary International in Great Britain and
Ireland. "What we're looking for is to make sure that there is a
great need that the charities are addressing. We also want to make
sure that they are not already being adequately supported by other
organizations and that they have good administration, not spending
huge amounts of money on overhead costs."
The fundraising arrangement with Pendragon involves Rotarians and
their families participating in a preferential car purchase program.
In addition to offering these Rotarian buyers a discount, the
dealership will make a donation to benefit the Foundation for each
car purchased during a five-year period.
"It is an honor to be supporting Rotary," says Malcolm Pearson, a
Pendragon senior executive, who notes that Rotary's fundraising
efforts in Great Britain and Ireland alone raise more than US$37
million per year for charitable causes.
The Jaguar Enthusiasts' Club will contribute the joining fee of any
Rotarian who becomes a member to the Foundation.
Other organizations also are enthusiastic about working with
Rotary. "Barnardo's is delighted to be receiving Rotary's support to
help our work change the lives of these disadvantaged and vulnerable
children," says CEO Martin Narey.
Offer notes that Rotary also benefits by working with other
organizations. "Impact crosses many boundaries, with a train running
through India, plus education and medical centers in parts of East
Africa, Nepal, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka," says Offer. "In
Bangladesh, we saw the range of their work, from their hospital ship
to the training of health workers and home gardens. We were left
with great admiration for the work they are achieving."
