Fundamental Challenges to International Community Development:
Women's Empowerment and Education, Maternal Health, HIV/AIDS
Please email me <cadwalla at TWCNY.RR.COM> for a brochure of our
Rotarian Action Group RFPD conference titled, "Fundamental
Challenges to International Community Development: Women's
Empowerment and Education, Maternal Health, HIV/AIDS" to be held 2-3
November 2006 in Ft. Lee, New Jersey, just across the Hudson River
from New York City.
This conference is to be held in conjunction with the Rotary/UN Day
meeting of Rotary International being held on Saturday 4 November
2006. We will provide transportation to and from the United Nations
Building from the Ft. Lee Hilton Hotel as a part of the registration
fee, along with the other registration items.
This will be a cutting edge conference of many ideas you will not
have heard before on ways to reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS.
Few have discussed obstetric fistula and its significance to young
women in Africa. Noted experts from UNFPA will speak to HIV,
maternal health and women's empowerment and literacy. Rotarians
were moved to eradicate polio because there were 350,000 infected
children per year. We will discuss ways to reduce the 529,000
deaths in women due to pregnancy each year, and how you can be a
part of that team of effective workers.
Please send registration to <cadwalla at TWCNY.RR.COM> . Call the
Hilton Hotel directly at 201-461-9000. Be certain to tell them
that you are with this Rotary group to obtain a significant Rotary
discount for this first class venue.
"Why Do Developing Countries Not Develop?" some will ask. Come to
this conference, and bring your interested friends, to see what you
can do to help lift poor nations out of poverty.
Bill Cadwallader, PRID
North American Area Coordinator
Conference Chairman

3. 1217: Rotary's Challenges in Lebanon

Rotary's Challenges in Lebanon
77 bridges connecting all of Lebanon's roads together have been
bombed, South but also North and East including three bridges next
to the Casino du Liban, famous landmark north of Beirut, and near
the ancient city of Byblos also North of Beirut. By replying to the
kidnapping of 2 soldiers, Israeli forces have managed to put
everyone in Lebanon against it.
For the latest figures on the war on Lebanon , you can check
www.lebanonundersiege.gov.lb
On July 12 Hizbollah kidnapped 2 Israeli soldiers, to exchange them
with Lebanese prisoners in Israeli jails. In return Lebanon got
within 34 days of bombardment:
1,187 dead
974,184 displaced during the war
15,000 completely destroyed, 130,000 homes partially destroyed
255,986 current refugees
77 bridges destroyed
Lebanon is still besieged by Israel from sea, air and land. Israel
could have replied to the kidnapping of its soldiers in many ways,
including going to the UN - which by the way is still waiting for
Israel to abide to the UN's decades old resolutions concerning
Palestine and Palestinians right of return. The way it replied is
not the right one.
Syria - the only land route for trucks from Beirut harbor to the
Arab Gulf countries - will besiege Lebanon if UN forces - as
requested by Israel - come next to its borders with Lebanon . A real
catch-22 situation for us.
We need to make peace with everyone in this region. Lebanon does not
recognize Israel . Syria does not recognize Lebanon . Peace should
be everyone's priority. I am 57 years old and was born the year the
Palestinians left their homes in what is now Israel , they were
promised by the Arab regimes at that time that they would return
within 2 days. Half a million have been cramped in refugee camps in
Lebanon and thousands more are in camps in other Arab countries
since then.
Palestinians in the camps, and since few years Hizbollah chiites are
time bombs that can be defused when and if we have a just peace, the
return of the Palestinians to a free Palestinian State and the
return of the lands annexed by Israel. I should remind everyone that
the chiites in Lebanon threw rice on the Israelis forces entering
Lebanon in 1982, to `free' them from the Palestinians. What happened
since then? The Palestinians left Lebanon to Tunisia , then returned
to Gaza , but the Israelis stayed in Lebanon occupying it for 2
decades, creating - with the help of Syria - an opposition now
called Hizbollah.
Lebanon offered a unique peace opportunity in 2000 in a conference
in Beirut attended by Arab Heads of States. We are waiting for
Israel to accept it. In the meantime, any `public' meeting or joint
activity with Israelis - whom we do not consider as enemies - can
land us in jail in our countries. What other alternative or choice
do we have?
Yours in Rotary
