West African clubs set date for service project fair

  Rotary International News

Organizers of the West Africa Project Fair, first held in 2005 in
Accra, Ghana, have announced 1-5 November as the dates for this
  year's fair.

Aimed at bringing together Rotary clubs looking to partner on World
Community Service projects, the 2006 fair will take place at La Palm
Royal Beach Hotel, last year's venue.

District 9100, the host of the event, comprises 87 Rotary clubs in
14 West African countries, most of which are impoverished.
Organizers cite the overwhelming need for nongovernmental support of
development programs as a key motive behind the fair.

This year's event will focus on projects that address community
development, health and nutrition, literacy, water and sanitation,
  and the disabled.

The fair, the first Rotary club- and district-organized event of its
kind in Africa, was inspired by Uniendo América, a successful annual
project fair for Rotary clubs and districts in Central America.

In the beginning, it was unclear whether the West African version
would take root as an annual effort, as its initiators hoped. But
more than 200 projects, with an estimated implementation cost of
US$3 million, were on display at the 2005 event, and 12
  international partners attended the fair.

Encouraged by their success, the organizers immediately started
planning for a second event. With support from Rotarians in North
America and Europe, they've worked hard to diversify the base of
potential project partners, according to Past District Governor
Robert Atta, chair of the organizing committee.

"As I speak, 75 partners, mainly from North America but also from
Germany, Holland, and the UK, have already registered," says
Atta. "Our target is to register 120 partners. We are more than
halfway there already, and very soon, we will close registration."

Up to 70 clubs from the host district and the four districts in
Nigeria are expected to register to display their projects. Many
Rotary volunteers from abroad also have registered to attend the
  fair.

Atta says registration has filled up quickly this year because the
event has been planned around major National Immunization Days
  (NIDs).

"The fair was deliberately scheduled to coincide with the NIDs so
that international partners would get more value for their money,"
  notes Atta.

A $130 registration fee allows individuals to attend the fair and
join a tour after the event. Clubs pay $300 to display their
  projects.
