Wilkinson appointed to Canada's highest civilian honor
By Vanessa N. Glavinskas
Rotary International News
The governor general of Canada, Michaelle Jean, appointed RI
President Wilfrid J. Wilkinson a Member to the Order of Canada for
outstanding dedication to the community and service to the nation, on
3 May. It is Canada's highest civilian honor.
He was nominated by several organizations, including the Rotary Club
of Trenton, Ontario, and the Quinte Ballet School, where he served as
executive director.
"I am honored to receive this award," Wilkinson said. "I feel it is
really a recognition, to a very large extent, of Rotary International
and its polio eradication efforts, as opposed to me. I will accept it
on behalf of all of the people with whom I have worked over the
years."
Among his many volunteer activities, Wilkinson led a fundraising
effort that convinced the Canadian government to donate US$180
million to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
Wilkinson has received many Rotary honors, including The Rotary
Foundation's Citation for Meritorious Service, International Service
Award for a Polio-free World, and Distinguished Service Award, and
the RI Service Above Self Award. He has also been recognized for his
humanitarian service by the Knights of Columbus and the Province of
Ontario. An acceptance ceremony for Wilkinson is being planned.
