Wilkinson presents $45,000 for new homes along Katrina-ravaged Gulf
Coast
Rotary International News
To support the rebuilding of homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina,
Rotary International President Wilfrid J. Wilkinson presented a
US$45,000 check to Pete Owsianowski president of the Rotary Club of
South Bend, Indiana, USA, and former University of Notre Dame
basketball coach Digger Phelps on 27 July.
The South Bend club is working in cooperation with the National
Association of Basketball Coaches to provide new homes for displaced
families. Phelps seeded the effort with his own financial
contribution and invited the South Bend club, Indiana's second
largest Rotary club, to assist in fundraising.
"The commitment of the South Bend Rotary club to the long-term
recovery of the Gulf Coast is a perfect example of the impact Rotary
can have on people's lives," Wilkinson said. Since the disaster,
thousands of Rotarians have also volunteered their time and resources
to help Gulf Coast residents.
The $45,000 contribution comes from The Katrina Relief Fund, which
was established through The Rotary Foundation in the wake of the
August 2005 hurricane. The fund has distributed $2 million, with
support coming from Rotary clubs and friends of Rotary around the
world - and is part of more than $20 million being channeled through
local Rotary hands in the rebuilding effort.
Local leaders in affected Gulf Coast communities will select eligible
families for the homes. Under the program, each family agrees to pay
25 percent of the mortgage over time and to perform 20 hours of
community service each month. Each home is worth about $120,000.
The check presentation took place at one of seven membership
conferences being held by Wilkinson across North America to
brainstorm strategies for recruiting new members.

Moving forward and doing good in the world
Robert S. Scott
August 2007
Dear family of Rotary,
On 1 August, I became Rotary Foundation trustee chair. I'm deeply
honored by this opportunity. I would appreciate - and I need - your
support as Rotary Shares and we advance the many programs of the
Foundation to do good in the world.
I'm grateful that Past Foundation Trustee Chair Bhichai Rattakul will
remain a trustee and allow us to continue to benefit from his vast
experience and wisdom.
I had the privilege of working with Trustee Rattakul in developing
the Foundation's goals for the year, and they remain unchanged: (1)
to finish the job of global polio eradication and prove that a polio-
free world is realistic; (2) to fulfill the promise of Every
Rotarian, Every Year; (3) to show that peace is possible by
supporting the Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and
conflict resolution; and (4) to reconnect with Rotary Foundation
alumni, our forgotten assets.
These goals should guide all your deliberations at Foundation
meetings, from district seminars to club forums - and indeed, club
Foundation committee meetings. They will help us all to do good in
the world.
Robert S. Scott
Trustee Chair, The Rotary Foundation, 2007-08
