Rotary honors Côte d'Ivoire president for polio eradication leadership

Rotary International News

On 24 July, Rotary International recognized Côte d'Ivoire President
Laurent Gbagbo with its Polio Eradication Champion Award in honor of
his commitment to eradicating polio worldwide.

Under Gbagbo's leadership, the West African country has been free
from polio since 2005. Despite civil war in Côte d'Ivoire, Gbagbo
facilitated mass polio immunization campaigns, giving the occasions
the highest level of political support. In addition, he made a
personal contribution of US$36,000 to the cause.

Past RI President Luis Giay presented the award in Abidjan, the
country's capital.
"On behalf of Rotary's 1.2 million members worldwide, I am honored to
present this award to President Laurent Gbagbo," said Giay. "His
personal commitment to polio eradication is an inspiration to those
who are fighting the last of this disease."

Other leaders who have been honored with the award include Malaysian
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, former British Prime Minister
Tony Blair, former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, and
former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

The Rotary Foundation contact center has the answers

Rotary International News

Do you have questions about Foundation programs such as Ambassadorial
Scholarships or Group Study Exchange? Is your club thinking about
applying for a Rotary Foundation grant, but has questions about the
process? Are you wondering how much more you need to contribute to
become a Paul Harris Fellow?

A team of Foundation staff members is on hand to answer all these
questions and more at the Rotary Foundation Contact Center. In June,
the center handled more than 5,500 calls and emails, double the
amount of queries received in October 2006, its first month of
operation.

The toll-free number (866-9-ROTARY) is currently available only to
callers in North America, however the e-mail address may be used by
anyone around the world. Service is presently limited to English.

Contact Center manager Clifton Healy says that 90 to 95 percent of
callers get answers to their questions in their first call. Some
questions do require research, such as specific grant questions,
which are forwarded to the appropriate grant coordinator.

"We can e-mail Rotarians their donor history; we can provide a file
activity report for grants," Healy says. "We can answer general
questions about all divisions of The Rotary Foundation."

Reach the Rotary Foundation Contact Center at 866-9-ROTARY (866-976-
8279) or at contact.center at rotary.org, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5
p.m. CST.
