Trustee Scott is honored with peace award

Rotary Foundation Trustee Robert S. Scott was presented with the YMCA
Peace Medal Award in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada, on 13 December.

Scott, a retired physician and chair of the International PolioPlus
Committee, was recognized by the local YMCA chapter for his
outstanding volunteer leadership and dedication to addressing the
health issues of the developing world, including polio eradication.

"I felt the award was a good thing for Rotary," says Scott. "I was
humbled that many of the members of my Rotary club attended. The
  honor was due to them."

At the presentation, Jennifer Stadke, board member of the
Northumberland YMCA chapter, which includes Cobourg, explained that
because of his involvement in local and international humanitarian
causes, the honoree "is an example to us all of what one person can
do to make change in the world and improve life for those less
fortunate whenever there is a need."

In his acceptance speech, Scott made a clear link between polio
eradication and peace, especially in places afflicted by war. "The
PolioPlus program is a program of peace," says Scott, as quoted in
the Independent, a local newspaper. "Most people think it is a
program to eradicate polio, which of course it will do, but in order
to do that we have had to create what we call the days of
tranquility - days in which we have the combatants [in conflict
  zones] stop fighting."

The medal has been presented since 1988 as part of the annual YMCA
World Peace Week, which many chapters across Canada celebrate by
exploring peace from a personal, community, and international
perspective. Although the 2006 peace week was observed 18-25
November, the presentation of the award had to wait because Scott was
traveling on polio eradication missions in Pakistan, India, and
  Indonesia.

It was a double honor for local Rotarians because the Interact clubs
of Cobourg won the junior version of the YMCA peace award.
