PRID Benny Santos, +R.I.P.

The man often referred to as Philippine Rotary's living saint, and
spiritual father to some of us, PRID Benny Santos of D-3770, quietly
moved on, as he took his afternoon nap today, into God's eternal
kingdom.

He often said in his speeches that to live as a good and authentic
Rotarian was his sure ticket to sanctity and heaven. We all know
that he practised what he preached.

May we never forget what he taught us and the examples that he left
to us.

God be praised for His gift of Benny Santos to Rotary in the
Philippines and the rest of the world!

His remains lie in state at the family residence in Malolos, Bulacan.

Digging through history to find out why the Rotary year starts 1 July

By Antoinette Tuscano
Rotary International News

Dollars and some good financial sense are why the Rotary year starts
1 July - at least that's what the RI auditors said, according to 1912-
13 RI President Glenn C. Mead's report in the September 1913 issue of
The Rotarian.

The auditors found that the organization's affairs had been
managed "honestly and carefully." Still, RI was growing and had
recently become an international organization, and its needs were
changing.

The secretary and treasurer needed more time to prepare, audit, and
check the organization's financial statements by the end of the
calendar year. The auditors recommended that the organization close
its financial books for the year on 30 June, which was after the RI
Convention. The Board of Directors agreed, and ever since, the Rotary
year has begun on 1 July.

Ask RI President Bill Boyd

Q: Sometimes I'd really like to help out on projects, but I can't
afford to travel to them. I would appreciate knowing if there are
funds or grants that can ease the financial burden for volunteers.

Answer from Bill Boyd:

Travelling to projects can be expensive. For this reason, The Rotary
Foundation created Volunteer Service Grants, which replaced
Individual Grants.

Volunteer Service Grants provide a flat grant of up to US$3,000 for
an individual or up to $6,000 for a team of no more than five
members. Only active Rotarians are eligible to travel. Spouses who
aren't Rotary club members but who are qualified to serve may
accompany a team, but they may not serve as team leaders or travel
without a team.

Note: Not all Rotarians are eligible for Volunteer Service Grants. To
qualify for these grants, a Rotarian must demonstrate that

A community has a defined need for the project.
The need can be met by the experience and skills of the Rotarian or
team.
The experience and skills are not available in the community
