Rotary honors Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for his
support of a polio-free world

In recognition of the commitment and contribution of US$1 million
from the Government of Malaysia toward eradicating polio worldwide,
Rotary International today presented Prime Minister Datuk Seri
Abdullah Ahmad Badawi with its Polio Eradication Champion Award.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the
Government of Malaysia was the first Organization of the Islamic
Conference (OIC) <http://www.oic-oci.org/> http://www.oic-oci.org member
state to contribute to
a polio-free world following the adoption of a resolution supporting
polio eradication at the 2003 OIC summit. Malaysia placed the topic
of polio eradication on the summit agenda because 95% of all polio
cases occur in OIC member states.

Following the leadership of Malaysia, other OIC countries have
enacted policies and made contributions totaling US$8.6 million.
Saudi Arabia now requires all citizens of Nigeria - one of four polio-
endemic countries that halted polio immunizations from 2002-03 which
resulted in the international spread of the poliovirus - to be
vaccinated against polio prior to traveling for the Hajj and Umraa.
Nigerians traveling on business or for other purposes must show proof
of vaccination before getting a visa. In addition, the Islamic Fiqh
Academy strongly endorsed polio vaccination campaigns with the
publication of many Fatwas from noted Islamic Scholars, which has
helped convince parents to immunize their children.

The award, presented by Past Rotary International President Bhichai
Rattakul, was established in 1995 to recognize governments and world
leaders who have made outstanding contributions toward the goal of
eradicating polio. "On behalf of Rotary's 1.2 million members
worldwide, I am honored to present this award to Prime Minister
Abdullah Ahmad Badawi," said Rattakul. "As we stand on the brink of
polio eradication, it brings me great pleasure to celebrate the
tremendous achievements of our public/private partnership. Yet, since
most of the children in the world affected by polio reside in OIC
member states, continued political, financial and religious support
is vital if we are to rid the world of this disease once and for
all."

Rotary's commitment to end polio represents the largest private-
sector support of a global health initiative ever. In 1985, Rotary
members worldwide vowed to immunize all the world's children against
polio. Since then, Rotary has contributed US$616 million to polio
eradication. Rotary members in Malaysia have contributed over
US$600,000 in support of polio eradication. Besides raising and
contributing funds, over one million men and women of Rotary have
volunteered their time and personal resources to help immunize more
than 2 billion children in 122 countries during national immunization
campaigns.

Other leaders who have been honored with Rotary's Polio Eradication
Champion Award include; Prime Minister of Australia John Howard,
Prime Minister Helen Clark of New Zealand, British Prime Minister
Tony Blair, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi of Japan, Prime Minister
of India Manmohan Singh, President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo,
former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, President Mamadou Tandja of
Niger, President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan, and First Lady of
Egypt Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak.
