Green celebrations help the community and environment

By Sharon Broom and Becky Buyers-Basso
For Rotary International News

Independence Day in Bar Harbor, Maine, USA, this 4 July will be red,
white, blue - and green.

The Rotary Club of Bar Harbor (Mount Desert Island) has taken steps
that can be replicated by almost any club to make its warm weather
celebrations and fundraisers good for the community and the
environment.

The Bar Harbor Rotary club aims to make its 37th annual Fourth of
July Seafood Festival as environmentally responsible as possible by
using good recycling practices. The Sysco Corporation will donate to
the Rotary club biodegradable plates, cups, bowls, and napkins for
the event. The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce will donate compostable
cutlery - forks and spoons made from cornstarch.

And these measures will make a difference. On the Fourth of July, the
club plans to serve 1,500 pancake breakfasts and more than 1,000
seafood dinners.

Last year, Rotarians set up a waste recycling and composting center
at the town athletic field, where the festival is held. The event
yielded hundreds of pounds of paper waste for recycling and gallons
of organic material for composting, including lobster and mussel
shells, corn cobs, and watermelon rinds.

The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce took notice of the Rotarians'
effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle the waste created by the crowds
of eager pancake eaters and seafood feasters. Hoping to follow their
lead, the chamber president contacted the club to see if the business
organization could help expand the effort town-wide in 2007. In
addition to providing the biodegradable cutlery for the festival, the
chamber is planning to replicate the Rotarians' waste disposal
stations downtown and buy reusable tote bags for retailers to replace
plastic bags.

The Seafood Festival is the club's major fundraiser of the year,
along with the Fourth of July Blueberry Pancake Breakfast held at the
same site since the late 1980s. The day before the doubleheader
event, club members spend hours setting up tents, tables, chairs,
grills, and lobster cookers for the 1,000 pounds of lobster sold each
year. On the Fourth, Rotarians work from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. to cook,
serve, and clean up. The club expects to raise about US$13,000 this
year, and it will donate the funds to a variety of community
organizations. Recipients in the past have included the local YMCA
and YWCA; Island Connections, an organization that provides
transportation for older people; Acadia Affordable Housing; the Bar
Harbor Food Pantry; and the Maine Sea Coast Mission.

The festival is attended by thousands of people, and, along with the
town's parade and fireworks, helps to make Bar Harbor one of the
Maine coast's major destinations for the holiday.

McMullen, at 207-288-5008 or e-mail her at <mailto:ywcamdi%40verizon.net>

RI Board approves Strategic Plan 2007-10

At its June meeting, the RI Board approved a new mission, vision, and
set of core values for Rotary International, reaffirmed that Rotary's
motto is Service Above Self, and adopted the priorities and goals
established in the organization's 2007-10 Strategic Plan.

Rotary's new mission reads: The mission of Rotary International, a
worldwide association of Rotary clubs, is to provide service to
others, to promote high ethical standards, and to advance world
understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of
business, professional, and community leaders.

The vision of Rotary International is to be universally recognized
for its commitment to Service Above Self to advance world
understanding, goodwill, and peace.

Recognizing the role that core values play in driving the direction
of the organization and the actions of members, the Board approved
the following values as Rotary's guiding principles: Service,
fellowship, diversity, integrity, and leadership.

"These core values are all reflected in The Four Way Test," said 2007-
08 RI President Wilfrid J. Wilkinson. "By adopting a specific set of
core values in the strategic plan, we can provide Rotarians with more
explicit standards to guide and evaluate their actions."

In addition, the Board approved the following seven priorities as
recommended by the RI Strategic Planning Committee:

Eradicate polio
Advance the internal and external recognition and public image of
Rotary
Increase Rotary's capacity to provide service to others
Expand membership globally in both numbers and quality
Emphasize Rotary's unique vocational service commitment
Optimize the use and development of leadership talents within RI
Fully implement the strategic planning process to ensure continuity
and consistency throughout the organization.
Each priority is supported by a set of goals and success indicators
to measure progress being made. Look for brochures, presentations,
plan implementation progress reports, strategic planning models and
guidelines for clubs and districts, and other information on the
strategic plan in RI publications and on the Web site in upcoming
months.

RI Convention in Salt Lake City
offers unforgettable experiences

By Antoinette Tuscano

>From 17-20 June, Rotarians from around the world are gathering in one
of the great cities of the American West, Salt Lake City, Utah, for
the 98th RI Convention. The event offers an international experience
that goes far beyond typical weekly Rotary club meetings.

Attendees are surrounded by the global family of Rotary, experiencing
firsthand the fellowship that only this event brings. In addition,
Rotarians gain a deeper knowledge of the potential of Rotary and its
Foundation through workshops, discussion group sessions, and
plenaries.

RYLArians, Rotaractors, and other family of Rotary members also come
from far and wide for several preconvention events. A first-time
event this year is the Rotary World Peace Symposium in which 105
alumni and 71 current participants of The Rotary Foundation's two
peace programs from 50 countries will assemble to honor the 10th
anniversary of the Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace
and conflict resolution and 90th anniversary of The Rotary Foundation.

During the plenaries, speakers such as Francis Moloi will inspire
Rotarians. On Monday, Moloi, a South African ambassador to India and
former Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar, will speak on the
session's theme: "Rotary In Action."

Tuesday's keynote plenary speaker is William H. Gates Sr., father of
Microsoft's founder who chairs the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a
major private sector supporter of the global polio eradication
initiative.

On Wednesday, convention attendees will hear Hyrum W. Smith, a
motivational speaker who helps individuals gain better control of
their personal and professional lives through values-based time and
life management.

When not at the plenary sessions, Rotarians will visit the House of
Friendship to enjoy international fellowship while soaking in
regional entertainment and culture. They will also browse through
booths to find out how to join one of Rotary's many Global Networking
Groups or visit exhibits that highlight Rotarians' work worldwide,
ranging from health and hunger initiatives to microcredit projects.

Rotarians will attend workshops on topics including successful
microcredit projects and listen to Rotarian author Stephen R. Covey's
presentation on leadership.

Whether meeting other Rotarians through fun-filled host city events
or participating in engaging discussions about club projects,
Rotarians will enjoy a convention that fosters fellowship and
enhanced understanding of Rotary to inspire them their clubs
throughout the year.
